Last weekend I installed these atelier shelves above my workbench. I was inspired by fellow blogger and artist Silvina Day who's husband so graciously built a similar system in her Southern California studio. They're a great way to display work as you can rotate paintings easily without having to put a million holes in the wall. (On a side note, it's interesting meeting fellow artists all over the world, you just never know what kind of connection you might have. It turns out Silvina and I attended the same junior high and high school in Chatsworth, CA.)

Another view of my studio on the opposite side. The ink drawing of the ship is a study of a sculpture I plan on building this year. Here's a close up:

  1. Hey, nice job on the picture shelves! They make the studio much more functional and organized. Thanks for the mention and link back to my blog, fellow Chatsworthsonian!

  2. You have a wonderful studio you have. Where is it? I find organization and lack of clutter is very helpful to free the mind for creativity.

  4. Your studio I could feel right at home in. Really. Your little picture of the chair is so SMALL...A happy studio means a happy artist which means great creativity..so happy painting Denny!! I can hear Wish you were here by Pink Floyd now!

  5. Silvina~ Though mine don't run the full length of the wall like yours (and mine are higher, I am 6'2" after all) I am quite pleased with them. Now I am a serious artist!!

Donna~ this is my garage which I converted to my studio when we bought the house. It has vaulted ceilings, a huge skylight, and a frosted glass backdoor. Before I put those in the place was a cave.

April J~ It is a bit homey and all I need is a rug because that concrete sucks the warmth out of my legs. When we have big parties it's a cool place to hang out. Bring your family out sometime!(oh yeah, no one's leaving Europe now because of that pesky cloud...)

  6. Denny; I LOVE these shelves, and am going to put up some of my own asap! As luck would just have it, my plan has been that when I finshed the last of several deadlines (the swan!) I was going to reorganize and paint my drawing room.....perfect time to install atelier shelves! I'm assuming they have a 'trough' that runs down the length of them?......or something else to help hold things in place?

  7. Lynda~ you must have these shelves in your studio, you too will be a serious artist!! But seriously, there's no trough, I added a thin strip of lattice wood to the front edge of the shelf to keep things from slipping off. The lattice is 1/4" thick by 1 1/8" wide. Do it before your son finishes college!

  9. Oh my......am I THAT transparent? ("Do it before your son finishes college"......hahahaha). Yes, the piece of lattice strip makes much more sense than a trough. I'm going to do this as soon as my room is repainted and put together. (Really, I AM.)

  11. Hey Denny, great peek into your studio...I have those shelves above my worktable, but they are not as *neat* as yours by a long stretch!! you are a wonderful artist, I can't wait to see the ship sculpture, I love ships (in the abstract, not sure I would cross the ocean with 60 ft. waves in one!)...

have a wonderful weekend, enjoy, it's supposed to storm again next week ;-(

    xx
