M is for Mockingbird
Oil on canvas with library catalog cards.

January is one of my favorite months. Quiet, sparse, and dark, it is a month of artistic indulgence and introspect. The sky takes on an incredible topography with every storm rolling off the Pacific, inspiration for throwing some color on canvas. Groups of oily black ravens land on my lawn heralding the new year with agitated squawks and caws. My studio is cold this time of year so I'll hunker down in the back spare room of the house to work. Warm, southern exposure is everything in January. Here's to you, my fellow bloggers, designers, and artists- I feel it's going to be a very good year. Cheers.

  1. Denny-
I'm SURE it's going to be a good year!
I'm curious where the idea for the library cards came from...Love it!
    BTW...Enjoying the book a lot!
    David @ Ashfield Hansen Design

  2. David~ Jessie got the cards when she worked at the Stanford arts library when they were converting their whole catalog electronically. Since they all contain art book titles I thought it would look nice to "tile" them as a backdrop, letting the text and parchment color come through the piece. Glad you're liking the book...I love Boyle's writing!

  3. And let's hope it is's to everything you wish for and all you achieve in the process...!

  4. Hi Denny this is sweet! are you doing the whole alphabet too?

in case I didn't say it yet to you...Happy New Year!

  5. Kit~ I had thought of that, maybe this is the year to consider such a project. Hmmmm...

  6. And to you Denny, the best the year has to offer. It IS going to be a good year!

  7. Denny-

Such an exquisite painting. Love it.

Here's to a wonderful healthy and creative and exciting year for all.

We are ready for everything that comes. We are ready for dragons and demons--we've already faced them.

    cheers, DIANE
